
Already fond of Laura and wanting to ease her homesickness, Almanzo takes it upon himself to bring her home and back to school each weekend. At around the same time as occurrence of the literary meetings, Almanzo Wilder begins escorting Laura home from school. Around Christmas, Almanzo offers to take Laura on a sleigh ride after he completes the cutter he is building. Many of the incidents in the book are actual situations that happened to the Ingalls family.

Laura and Albert offer to sacrifice their earnings from selling the honey to cover most of the cost. Mr. Oleson is out of town on a buying trip, and Mrs. Oleson attempts to swindle the children by only offering them 15 cents a pound. Albert cleverly offers Mrs. Oleson their main beehive for the full amount promised, and she accepts. En route to Minneapolis, Mary, Adam and another woman are involved in a serious stagecoach accident due to a faulty wagon wheel.
